Top 10 Website Promotion Tips.
We are constantly asked by businesses who had their websites designed by other companies why their website can't be found in the search engines. The following is a condensed version of the top ten mistakes to avoid to effectively promote your website:
Mistake Number 10: Build It And They Will Come.
This worked for Kevin Costner, but in today's Internet it takes more than irrational exuberance and a belief in Santa Claus to get noticed. Yet we constantly hear about webmasters who even today believe that a good website will attract search engine spiders -- that if they wait long enough, the search engine spiders will eventually find the site.
Unfortunately, they couldn't be more wrong! You have to submit your site to get noticed. There are thousands of new websites every day, so you can't afford to be passive. Website promotion is too important to leave to chance. We can help you submit, submit, and submit again!
Mistake Number 9: The Lights Were Out And Nobody Was Home.
When search engines visit, your site must respond. They don't make appointments, so its important to use a reliable web host who keeps your site up and running. Did you know that 40% of web servers experienced substantial downtime last year? Webadex's hosting solution delivers 99.9% uptime.
Mistake Number 8: Dynamic Content Is Invisible To Spiders.
Websites that rely on databases and dynamic content to create information for their visitors are great, but have one serious drawback: most search engine robots can only index static pages. If you submit pages to search engines that are created dynamically, there is a good chance the search engine will be unable to "see" the page when its spider visits. Be sure that the pages you submit will be able to be seen by the search engines, otherwise your effort will be wasted.
Mistake Number 7: Spam Gets Canned.
The power of association works on the Internet just as it does in the real world: if your site is associated with spam sites by virtue of the fact that your site is hosted by a shared web host known for spam content, your site may be blocked too. This is typical of free web hosts because of the proliferation of spam content, but you can have a problem with paid providers, too -- especially if the host accepts adult-oriented web sites. These kind of sites are often the worst spam offenders.
Mistake Number 6: No Substitute For Good Design.
Search engine spiders try to be very efficient at what they do -- they love websites that have lots of text-related content and avoid sites that use lots of flashy content, graphics, and splash pages, because they cannot evaluate non-text content.
Also, it's important to use strategically chosen TITLE and META tags throughout your site. These are coded helpers that allow the search engines to be even more efficient at indexing your site and are one of the most over-looked areas of website design.
Mistake Number 5: A Framed Spider Is A Dead Spider.
Spiders hate frames, since most spiders are not able to see beyond the topmost level of frame coding. This makes it virtually impossible for the search engine to index the content of a framed site -- unless your website designer provided the spider links to crawl in the top level frame. If not, the spider will have nothing to see or do and will leave your site without indexing it.
Mistake Number 4: No Vacancy.
Some search engine databases have an upper limit to the number of pages they can index. If the search engine you submit to has reached its upper limit they don't place your site on a waiting list -- they simply block your submission. For example, Excite didn't index any new sites for months in early 2000! It may be necessary to submit your site several times to the same search engine before you find room in their database.
Search engine tracking is an important element of your search engine submission process. If you don't track whether your site was picked up by your submission efforts you may believe you have been indexed when, in fact, you were blocked.
Mistake Number 3: Out With The Old, In With The New.
Search engines often drop websites from their databases in order to make room for new listings. Afterall, they want to keep their indexes up to date and packed with the most recent and useful content.
You can avoid this problem by resubmitting your site regularly. Not only will the search engines view your site as if it were new, but also, any fresh content you may have posted during your last update or refresh will be indexed, too.
Mistake Number 2: Patience Is A Virtue.
After submitting your site, be patient. Most search engines promise to visit within 1 to 2 weeks, but many suffer from a tremendous backlog as thousands of new sites are created and resubmitted every day.
The best way to get listed is to submit once, and then resubmit once every week until you are picked up. Once you're listed, don't submit to the same engine for awhile or you run the risk of getting banned as a spam site.
Mistake Number 1: Use The Right Tool.
Manual submission of your website is a slow and tedious way to get listed on search engines. Even if you're really good at it and do it quite often, it will still take you a minimum of 8 - 10 minutes per submission. Multiply that by 100 search engines and you could take over one week -- and that's if you work it full-time!
Webadex uses a professional search engine submission and tracking tool that submits your site quickly and easily to 100 search engines. The fee for this service is quite reasonable and is one of the best ways to get your site the visitor traffic it needs.
Be wary of "free" submission services or advertisements for submission to the top 1000 search engines. First of all, there aren't that many worthwhile search engines out there. And second, these kind of offers are usually thinly veiled attempts to obtain your email address and sell it to spammers. Within days of trying out such a service you could be inundated with offers for everything from mail order brides to diplomas to illegal cable-tv converter kits.
